Toby Alderweireld says he is still unsure over his future at Tottenham Hotspur amid persistent links with a move to Manchester United.

Alderweireld has just one year remaining on his contract in north London and is reportedly on a shortlist of defenders wanted by Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford.

Speculation over his future was put on hold during Belgiums World Cup campaign, which came to an end with a third place play-off victory over England on Saturday.

But with just over three weeks until the summer transfer window closes and with the centre-half seemingly still no closer to signing a new contract, questions over his next move have already re-emerged.

When asked if he will be leaving Tottenham this summer by Belgian publication Het Nieuwsblad, he responded: I really do not know anything yet. In my head I just go to Tottenham. We will see.

Alderweirelds 2017-18 campaign was largely disrupted by a hamstring injury which initially ruled him out of action for four months, with a recurrence of that problem further delaying his return.

The former Ajax defender started just three Premier League matches in 2018, with doubts over his future at the club also complicating matters with Mauricio Pochettino choosing to persist with Davinson Sanchez alongside Jan Vertonghen in defence even upon his return to full fitness.

Despite his lack of club football, Alderweireld enjoyed an impressive World Cup campaign in Russia, starting and completing all of Belgiums matches bar their dead rubber group contest against England where a host of first-teamers were rested.

The centre-half appeared to aim a dig at his club manager, suggesting his omission from the Spurs first-team was unjustified before insisting he has firmly addressed any doubts over his long-term fitness.

I was very focused on this tournament, he continued. I wanted to prove something again. Show that the period before the tournament in which I did not play – for whatever reason – was unjustified.

I wanted to show that I am still the same Toby as in November.
