Arsene Wenger once confused incoming Arsenal manager Unai Emery with Croatias team doctor
Emery is on the verge of being appointed as Arsenals new boss ahead of Mikel Arteta after impressing the Gunners hierarchy during the interview process.
But just over two years ago, Wenger was involved in an embarrassing gaffe with Emery at the centre of the confusion.
The 68-year-old was working for French television at Euro 2016 and attended Croatias clash with Turkey at the Parc de Princes.
Before the game, Wenger got talking to who he thought was Emery, but it turned out that he was speaking with Croatias team doctor Tomaslav Madzar.
Wenger congratulated Madzar for winning the Europa League with Sevilla and asked if he had reached an agreement with Paris Saint-Germain.
I was talking to David Trezeguet, Wenger shook my hand and congratulated me on the Europa League win with Sevilla, Madzar told Sportske Novosti after the match.
Then he asked me if Id reached an agreement with PSG.
In Wengers defence, former France striker David Trezeguet, who was also working as a TV pundit during that game, confused Madzar with Emery.
Arsenal fans will be pleased to know that Wenger is now fully aware of Emerys achievements after offering the Spaniard his backing to stay at Paris Saint-Germain earlier this season.
