Tesla released a $1500 surfboard, and it sold out in a matter of hours
Tesla debuted a new product on Saturday night, in the form of a perfectly normal surfboard.
Branded with the Tesla logo and decorated in its trademark red and black colours, the limited run of 200 boards was designed in partnership with surfer brand Lost.
While Lost's boards usually retail within the region of $800, this board was on sale for $1500 (£1,144). It sold out within a matter of hours, and is now listed as "out of stock".
The board has since reappeared on several reselling sales, with one board on Ebay going for nearly $5,000.
Tesla's online shop included the following description:
Designed by the Tesla Design Studio in collaboration with Lost Surfboards and Matt “Mayhem” Biolos, surfboard shaper for World Surf League Championship athletes. The Limited Edition Tesla Surfboard features a mix of the same high-quality matte and gloss finishes used on all our cars. The deck is reinforced with light-weight “Black Dart” carbon fibre, inspired by the interiors in our cars, and featuring tonal logos in subtle contrast gloss.
The board does not appear to have any particular physical design elements unique to Tesla, other than its appearance.
Tesla has made wacky lifestyle products on the side for its cult followers before, including miniature Tesla vehicles for children, a line of clothing manufactured from leftover vehicle materials and USB chargers shaped like the Supercharger which fuels its cars.
Its CEO Elon Musk has favoured more expensive toys as of late, including a $20,000 flamethrower built by another of his ventures The Boring Company.
