Raymond van Barneveld was fighting back the tears as he made his way to the stage for his last ever Premier League match.

The Dutch legend was already guaranteed to be relegated from the tournament before his clash with Michael van Gerwen on Thursday night, and with retirement looming at the end of the season, he knew this was to be his last game in the competition.

His Premier League swansong also came in front of a Rotterdam crowd that adores the five-time world champion and were vocal in showing their support one more time.

Barney just about held it together as he walked to the oche, but it was clearly a struggle.

Things did not go to plan on the big stage for RvB as he took an absolute walloping from fellow Dutchman Michael van Gerwen.

The world number one was not ready to cut his compatriot any slack and gave Barney a 7-1 hammering to send him off into the sunset.

It was Van Barnevelds iconic walk-on music of Survivors Eye of the Tiger that played out across the Ahoy Rotterdam after the match, though, as the Dutch crowd bid farewell to their hero.

An emotional Van Barneveld said after the defeat: I feel ashamed for everything I do for everything I do in my whole life, my whole career. The last two nights, I dont know.

Van Gerwen admitted that playing under the circumstances was tricky.

Of course its difficult, said the world champion.

Raymonds phenomenal, what he did for the sport, but hes out of this tournament and Im still fighting for the top position. Its so hard.
