Mal Bromley lands spot in exclusive club | Golf

Like a fine Margaret River wine, local golfer Mal Bromley keeps getting better with age. Statistically speaking, shooting your age during a round of golf is harder than hitting a hole in one. Mal Bromley would know, he's part of an elusive group of golfers to achieve both in his lifetime. The Gracetown local put together an impressive round of golf to record 40 Stableford points and shoot 78 off the stick during his Sunday competition round at the Margaret River Golf Club. Mal was thrilled with the achievement and placed it up there with his two previous holes in one as one of his most memorable days on the golf course. Mal's golf journey started at age 10 when his cousin, the Sports Department Manager at Boans, gave he and his brother two or three golf clubs to play around with. At aged 15, Mal's family moved into Wembley Downs, just up the road from Wembley Golf Course. Mal self-taught himself the game of golf and he would often jump the back fence at Wembley to play several holes undetected. In 1972 Mal became a member at Nedlands Golf Club where he played in their Division Two pennant team. The 123 metre 7th at Nedlands became the site of Mal's first official hole in one in 2004. This was followed in 2012 with another hole in one on Margaret River Golf Club's 12th. Even at 78 years of age Mal still plays regular competition rounds (off an impressive handicap of 10) at Margaret River Golf Club and his passion for the game has never wavered.
