Rohit Sharma narrowly missed out on the record for the most runs scored at a single World Cup after Indias semi-final defeat to New Zealand.

Sharma enjoyed a sensational campaign for two-time winners India, becoming the first player to score five centuries at one World Cup after a quite brilliant run through the group stage.

The opening batsman began the tournament with an unbeaten 122 in the victory over South Africa, before making 57 as India beat Australia at The Oval.

A stunning 140 against Pakistan followed, before Sharma suffered rare failures in the wins over Afghanistan and West Indies.

Most runs in a single World Cup campaign

Sachin Tendulkar, India: 673 (2003, 11 innings)

Matthew Hayden, Australia: 659 (2007, ten innings)

Rohit Sharma, India: 674 (2019, nine innings)

He nicked off for just one against the Kiwis, however, as India were eliminated following an 18-run defeat. The exit meant Sharma fell 26 runs short of Tendulkars all-time record for the most runs scored at a single World Cup tournament.

India legend Tendulkar amassed 673 runs from 11 innings during the 2003 World Cup and Sharma finished this tournament with 648 from nine knocks.

India were bidding to win the World Cup for a third time, following their triumphs in 1983 and 2011. New Zealand have never won the competition but will face either England or Australia in Sundays final.
