Jurgen Klopp predicts important role for top talent Rhian Brewster at Liverpool this season
Jurgen Klopp has insisted that Rhian Brewster has an important role to play for Liverpool this season after the youngster scored twice in their 6-0 win over Tranmere Rovers.
The highly-rated 19-year-old started Liverpools opening pre-season match at Prenton Park and impressed with an assist and two confident finishes before coming off at half-time.
Brewster, who won the Golden Boot when Englands U17 side lifted the World Cup in 2017, has endured an injury nightmare after being sidelined for 15 months with a serious ankle injury.
He finally returned to fitness in April and Klopp hinted that he would compete with senior strikers Roberto Firmino and Divock Origi for a place in Liverpools attack following Daniel Sturridges departure.
When asked whether it will be a big season for Brewster, Klopp responded: 100 per cent, but again it depends on him as well.
Divock Origi stays, obviously, which is good news; Bobby Firmino is still there; Rhian Brewster is a top striker, a top talent, and I am really happy.
I told him already, he has an important role this year – but how important? Again, it depends on him and we will see.
He has to play different positions as well because the centre is OK, wing I think is possible, and then we will see how we can line up. There will be opportunities for him, I am really sure.
Brewster joined Liverpools academy in 2014 after spending six years at Chelsea and was rewarded for his progress on Merseyside with a five-year contract last June.
Injury problems have delayed Brewsters impact on the first-team and although he is yet to make his senior debut, he was named on the bench for the thrilling 4-0 win over Barcelona in May.
