Sydney FC beats Melbourne Victory to Luke Brattan’s signature

Sydney FC have won the race for Luke Brattan, signing the proven A-League midfielder to a one-year contract.

The Sky Blues faced stiff competition from Melbourne Victory for Brattan's signature but the 29-year-old made the decision late on Thursday to join the reigning champions and jumped on a flight to Sydney the next morning to train alongside his new teammates for the first time.

It represents another recruitment win for Sydney over Victory, having last month lured New Zealand international Kosta Barbarouses away from their arch-rivals.

"Im delighted to be here and signing with Sydney FC," Brattan said. "It is a huge club and we have some fantastic quality in the squad who I am looking forward to playing alongside.

"Sydney FC is the benchmark in the Hyundai A-League and my aim is to help push that to another level this season.

"Im looking forward to winning more trophies with this incredible group of players and helping to take this club to our best ever finish in the AFC Champions League."

Brattan, who has spent the last three seasons on loan at Melbourne City from their parent club in Manchester, had been poised to sign for Turkish club Yeni Malatyaspor earlier this month but decided against it after travelling to see their facilities in person, citing family reasons.
