COVID vaccine makers vow science—not Trump—will dictate release timing

In an extraordinary move Tuesday, nine top pharmaceutical executives made a public pledge that they will not prematurely release a COVID-19 vaccine and that they will only seek federal approval to distribute a vaccine after rigorous ethical and scientific standards are met.
The pledge was signed by the CEOs of AstraZeneca, BioNTech, GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson, Merck, Moderna, Novavax, Pfizer, and Sanofi. All of the represented companies are working on a vaccine against COVID-19 and four—AstraZeneca, Moderna, and a joint venture between BioNTech and Pfizer—have vaccines in phase 3 clinical trials.
The vow appears to be a coordinated resistance to pressure from the Trump administration, which is pushing for a rollout of a vaccine by November 1, just before the presidential election. Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told states to be ready to start distributing vaccines by November 1.
Critics have called the timeline unrealistic, noting its unlikely that vaccine developers would have sufficient data from the phase 3 trials by that time, let alone the necessary vaccine manufacturing and distribution infrastructure ready. They also pointed out that the pre-election target for a vaccine release appears solely based on politics, not public health.
In a press conference Monday, President Trump denied that he was racing to distribute vaccine for political reasons or pushing for a pre-election release. However, his denial was weakened by repeated references to a pre-election release. In his opening remarks, Trump said we “could even have [a vaccine] during the month of October… the vaccine will be very safe and very effective, and it will be delivered very soon. You could—you could have a very big surprise coming up.”
At one point in the question-and-answer session with reporters, Trump obviously alluded to Election Day, saying: “So were going to have a vaccine very soon, maybe even before a very special date. You know what date Im talking about.”
Such politicization of public health efforts amid the pandemic has already taken its toll. Public trust in the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration has eroded following questionable decisions and reversals. And although vaccines for COVID-19 are still in various stages of testing, several polls have already indicated that the public is wary of whatever vaccine eventually does earn federal approval.
The nine pharmaceutical companies appear to be both bucking the politicization of their potential vaccines as well as attempting to quell public concern that an eventual vaccine will be tested thoroughly for safety and efficacy.Read More – Source
Spain’s competition watchdog opens disciplinary case against Google
Spain’s competition watchdog, the ‘Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia’ (CNMC) has opened a disciplinary case against Google for alleged anti-competitive practices affecting publishers and Spanish news agencies, it said in a statement on Tuesday.
CNMC said it was investigating whether Google had abused its dominant position in the Spanish market. The proceedings involve Google LLC, Google Ireland Ltd, Google Spain, SL., and the overall parent company Alphabet Inc.
The alleged practices also include distorting free competition and imposing unfair conditions on press publishers and Spanish news agencies, CNMC said.
The watchdog’s investigation was sparked by a complaint from the Spanish Reproduction Rights Centre (CEDRO).
CNMC will investigate the case over the next 18 months, during which both sides can present their arguments.
According to RTVE, Spain’s national broadcaster, Google will analyse the file and respond to the ‘doubts’ of the CNMC. They said that Google ‘works constructively with publishers in Spain and Europe’ and would ‘need time to analyse the details … as the nature of the claims is still not clear’.
It is not the first action by the Spanish competition regulator against Google, nor the first in which its dominant position in the media sector stands out. In 2021, CNMC already warned that this company and another technology giant, Amazon, monopolised 70% of internet advertising in Spain.
Other lawsuits in the Netherlands and the UK have previously accused the technology company of abusing its dominance in the digital advertising market to harm its competitors. France also fined Google in 2021 for not negotiating in good faith compensation for the media for using its news content.
