MEXICO CITY • Physics major Bryson DeChambeau was smiling after solving the high-altitude puzzle, and he was giddy with joy after charging into a one-stroke lead at the halfway stage of the WGC-Mexico Championship on Friday.

The American put on a putting clinic as he made seven birdies in an eight-hole stretch en route to an eight-under 63 at Mexico City's Club de Golf Chapultepec, which sits more than 2,300m above sea level.

The 26-year-old rolled in 143 feet of putts and, at 11-under 131, he is one stroke ahead of South African Erik van Rooyen, who matched the course record of 62 on his 30th birthday, and American Patrick Reed (63).

Japan's Hideki Matsuyama (64) and American Justin Thomas (66) trailed by two strokes, while Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy (69) fell three behind after a frustrating afternoon.

"When you have days like that you can't help but smile out there," said a beefed-up DeChambeau, who has added about 14kg of rippling muscle over the past year in an effort to increase his power.

"Making those putts the way I did, striking the ball like I did, it was surely a joy out there."

It was his silky putting touch that was most responsible for his sizzling score, not least the 45-footer that he sank at his 16th hole, the par-three seventh.

"I just threw my hands up in the air. I mean, c'mon," said the five-time PGA Tour winner, who has also won on the European Tour. "The confidence has got to be high and it is high. Everything's going pretty well, firing on all cylinders."

The same could be said for van Rooyen, who has chipped in three times already, twice on Thursday and once on Friday.

"When you shoot nine under everything's going well," he said.

LAS VEGAS (Reuters, Guardian) – Britains Tyson Fury delivered a dominant performance in his heavyweight championship bout with Deontay Wilder on Saturday (Feb 23), overwhelming his opponent to earn a seventh round TKO victory in Las Vegas.

In the highly-anticipated super fight rematch between the two titans, Fury took control late in the first round and never relinquished it, knocking down Wilder twice and bloodying him en route to the referee stopping the fight in the seventh where Wilders corner threw in the towel.

Fury used his reach advantage to continually beat Wilder to the punch. He took total control in the third where he landed a right hand to Wilders left ear to drop him to the canvas.

Wilder never regained his legs or footing after that, wobbling through the rest of the match.

Fury again dropped Wilder in the fifth with a body punch and then caught him in the corner with a flurry of punches in the seventh where it ended.

“I hit him with a clean right that dropped him and he got back up,” said Fury in the Guardian report, He landed 82 of 267 punches (30.7 per cent), compared to 34 of 141 for Wilder (24.1 peRead More – Source

MUMBAI: Pakistan will confer honorary citizenship on former West Indies captain Darren Sammy for his "invaluable contribution" towards the return of top-flight cricket to the country, its cricket board said.

Pakistan successfully hosted two tests against Sri Lanka in December – their first at home since a militant attack on Sri Lanka's team bus in Lahore in 2009 that killed six security personnel and two civilians and wounded six players.

While the international cricket community stayed away from travelling to Pakistan following the attack, Sammy has been a regular member of the Peshawar Zalmi side in the Pakistan Super League since its start in 2016.

The 36-year-old St Lucian captained the franchise to the PSL title in the second edition in 2017 and often advocated for the return of international cricket to the country.

BARCELONA • Formula One's governing body has moved to ban for 2021 an ingenious new Mercedes steering wheel that has been the talk of pre-season testing.

The FIA's race director Michael Masi pointed to a change in the technical regulations, published at the end of last year, that effectively ruled out the future use of the DAS (dual-axis steering) system.

"You have been very wise in noticing the change to the 2021 technical regulations," said the Australian when asked by reporters, confirming also that there were no safety concerns about the system.

The new rule decrees the "re-alignment of the steered wheels… must be uniquely defined by a monotonic function of the rotational position of a single steering wheel".

The DAS allows a driver to change the "toe angle" of the front wheels into corners and on the straights by pushing and pulling on the steering wheel, rather than just moving it sideways.

Mercedes technical director James Allison had said on Thursday, when DAS made its track debut, that the system had come as no surprise to the FIA, which had been kept informed along the way.

The team have been diligent in ensuring FIA approval thus far and it seems likely the governing body's knowledge of the system led to the rule change to ensure the potentially game-changing loophole is closed in 2021.

Whether or not that was the case, and how quickly rivals might be able to copy it and whether they might protest after the opening race, remained topics of conversation ahead of the season opener in Melbourne on March 15.

"I think we need to first understand how it works and understand what would be the performance benefit," said Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto, who added that he would look to the FIA to determine the DAS' legality for this season.

ISKANDAR PUTERI, Johor: Malaysia Super League champions Johor Darul Tazim (JDT) unveiled its new stadium on Saturday evening (Feb 22) with a spectacular lights and fireworks display.

The state-of-the-art sporting venue, which cost RM200 million (US$47.74 million) to build, can hold up to 40,000 spectators and is situated in the Iskandar Puteri region.

It is named the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium, after current Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, and was designed based on the shape of a banana leaf.

It is also equipped with LED floodlights as well as colourful facade lights to enhance spectator experience.

The stadium's opening marks a new chapter in the clubs history books.

The new venue replaces JDTs previous home ground — the Tan Sri Dato Haji Hassan Yunos Stadium, which was in Larkin and had a seating capacity of around 30,000.
